'Wuthering Heights in Translation' : exposition en ligne
De la lande du Yorkshire aux Philippines, du Japon au Brésil, en passant par la Turquie, le Mexique ou la France, les étudiant·es de 3e année LLCER anglais de la FLCE de Nantes Université, dans le cadre de leur cours de « Cultural Translation », vous invitent à découvrir les multiples vies du chef-d’œuvre d’Emily Brontë.
Grâce à des cartes interactives et des frises chronologiques numériques, l’exposition en ligne Wuthering Heights in Translation retrace les circulations du roman à travers ses traductions, adaptations et réécritures dans différents contextes culturels et historiques.
Comment traduire l'indicible ? Que deviennent l'esthétique gothique, les rapports de genre ou la violence des passions lorsqu'ils franchissent les frontières linguistiques, culturelles ou médiatiques ? Des adaptations destinées aux jeunes lecteurs aux ballets inspirés du roman, des couvertures qui réinventent son imaginaire aux costumes qui donnent corps aux personnages, des choix de traduction des noms propres aux réécritures épistolaires ou aux récits imaginant la jeunesse énigmatique de Heathcliff, les projets proposent autant de façons de redécouvrir Wuthering Heights. D'autres explorent les silences du texte, ses ellipses et ses zones d'ombre, invitant le public à enquêter, jouer et réfléchir aux multiples métamorphoses du roman.
Collaboratif, créatif et numérique, ce projet met en lumière la vitalité d'un classique qui, depuis près de deux siècles, ne cesse d'être traduit, adapté, réinventé et réinterprété à travers le monde.

From the Yorkshire moors to the Philippines, from Japan to Brazil, by way of Turkey, Mexico, and France, students from Nantes Université (FLCE) invite you to discover the many lives of Emily Brontë’s classic novel. Created by third-year students majoring in English as part of their Cultural Translation course, this online exhibition explores how Wuthering Heights has travelled across languages, cultures, and media.
Through interactive maps and digital timelines, the online exhibition Wuthering Heights in Translation traces the novel’s many journeys through its translations, adaptations, and rewritings across diverse cultural and historical contexts.
How do you translate the untranslatable? What happens to Gothic aesthetics, gender relations, or the violence of passion as they cross linguistic, cultural, and medial boundaries? From adaptations for young readers to ballets inspired by the novel, from book covers that reinvent its visual world to costumes that bring its characters to life, from the translation of proper names to epistolary rewritings and imagined accounts of Heathcliff's enigmatic youth, these projects offer a wealth of new ways to rediscover Wuthering Heights. Others explore the novel's silences, ellipses, and unresolved mysteries, inviting visitors to investigate, play, and reflect on the many transformations of this enduring classic.
Collaborative, creative, and digital, this project showcases the vitality of a novel that, for nearly two centuries, has continued to be translated, adapted, reinvented, and reinterpreted around the world.
